CARAVAN SALON with a great success story 60th birthday of the world’s leading trade fair for motorhomes, caravans and equipment

Since the first CARAVAN SALON was held in 1962 at Messe Essen, the development of the world’s leading trade fair for mobile leisure, now permanently held in Düsseldorf, has been impressive.
In 1962, 34,500 visitors attended the first CARAVAN SALON, where 61 exhibitors from eight countries presented caravans and accessories on 15,000 square metres exhibition space. The CARAVAN SALON DÜSSELDORF in 2019 attracted over 270,000 caravanning enthusiasts. They were shown caravans and motorhomes, accessories, extension components, tents and travel destinations by 645 exhibitors from 31 countries, who occupied space of around 214,000 square metres in 13 halls and open grounds. These record numbers reflected the great enthusiasm for caravanning in society. Under normal conditions, a continuation of the success story could have been expected in 2020, but the Corona pandemic put the brakes on the world’s leading trade fair for motorhomes and caravans.
But in 2020, the CARAVAN SALON was also a great success, albeit under completely different basic conditions. Last year, it was the trade fair with the highest number of visitors worldwide within the Corona pandemic. A viable hygiene concept in close cooperation with the authorities with a prescribed minimum distance of 1.5 m, the use of face masks and hand sanitizer dispensers was necessary for the fair to take place. In addition, only a limited daily number of visitors could be admitted after prior online registration. Despite these restrictions, the 107,000 visitors ensure very good sales results and satisfied faces among the participating exhibitors. Especially in these extraordinary times, the CARAVAN SALON has underlined its special importance as an indispensable information and sales platform.
“Right from the start CARAVAN SALON was conceived as a new products and innovations event. It now plays this role not only for the premieres of the new generation of vehicles, but also for all important innovations in the supplier and accessories industry. This is also reflected in the sharp increase in the number of trade visitors from all over the world, making this fair the only international event in the industry. The CARAVAN SALON was and is the most important indicator for trends in the caravanning industry,” says Stefan Koschke, Project Director of the CARAVAN SALON.

In 1962 the first CARAVAN SALON, which was initiated by the industry and retail as their own autumn trade fair, lasted five days. The camping exhibition in spring, in which caravans were just one exhibit among many, was no longer sufficient to the growing industry as a platform. In addition, the industry wanted to exhibit and place orders in autumn, so that the vehicles could be delivered right on time for the new season in spring. The initiators of CARAVAN SALON got the inspiration for the new trade fair’s name from an event in London’s Earls Court as the new premiere trade fair was to be international. The organizers were the German Camping Club (DCC – Deutsche Camping-Club) and the Association of German Caravan Retailers and Importers (Verband Deutscher Wohnwagen-Händler und –Importeure).
The response to the new trade fair was so good, that after the second event was held in 1963, which also lasted five days, it was already regarded as the largest European event of its kind. Almost all the standard European caravan models were represented, and in total there were around 250 caravans and mobile homes on display. In 1964 the trade fair’s duration was for the first time extended to 9 days and two weekends. At this, the third trade fair, a considerable number of foreign visitors were already registered.

Knaus Tabbert is a driver of innovation in the industry-In order to be successful, companies must permanently drive improvements forward in order to help actively shape the future of caravan mobility.

Therefore, Knaus Tabbert is fully focused on the power of innovation – with great success: in our record-breaking sales year of 2019, we manufactured more than 26,000 motorhomes, caravans and CUVs (Caravanning Utility Vehicles). Knaus Tabbert is optimistic about 2020, too.

What’s more, the Jandelsbrunn-based company was awarded for its innovative products: these include the European Innovation Award as well as various top finishes in the Caravan and Motorhome of the Year 2020 voting, which were awarded at the most successful CMT trade fair of all time. In general, the start of the trade fair in Stuttgart was extremely successful for Knaus Tabbert: the previous year’s sales figures were again exceeded.

At Knaus Tabbert, the future of recreational mobility has already begun

The key to success is the use of highly modern technologies similar to those employed in the automobile sector. The most recent example: the 48-Volt wiring system that Knaus Tabbert has developed for motorhomes in collaboration with Bosch Engineering. This has enabled Knaus Tabbert to forge entirely new roads: in the automobile sector, 48-Volt networks are considered key future technology for enabling electro-mobility, automated driving and low emissions.

In the caravan, this intelligent, independent power supply offers maximum mobility and freedom. Because what good is the most beautiful campsite if you are dealing with an insufficient power supply? With 48-Volt, on-board voltage, campers remain self-sufficient for much longer. Therefore, you don’t have to compromise on the accustomed comfort.

In a further step, e-mobility for motorhomes is conceivable – in lockstep with the automobile industry, Knaus Tabbert is therefore taking the next step towards establishing this future technology and revolutionising the construction of recreational vehicles.

For example, the system consists of an electric axle, modern sensor technology, as well as lithium‐ion‐batteries made by Bosch. Irrespective of the towing vehicle, it can generate electric energy, because through the generator operation of the Bosch 48-Volt e‐motor, the batteries can be charged while driving as well as through recuperation (energy recovery during the braking process).

The stored energy can subsequently be used by the customers within the motorhome or it can be transformed into energy used to power the vehicle.

Up to eight stationary 48-Volt lithium‐ion‐batteries ensure maximal flexibility. Furthermore, the system can be expanded to accompany portable 48-Volt battery units. These portable units can be charged at home or in the motorhome via an electric socket.

A manoeuvring function is even integrated: the motorhome can be moved into the desired position using an app.

Beyond this, a connectivity unit is the basis for providing digital services such as the regulation of the recuperation settings, which can be adjusted while driving using the mobile device.

No other manufacturer of motorhomes and caravans is currently working on these types of pioneering technologies.

Through additional innovations, Knaus Tabbert sets itself apart from the competition

In other areas as well, Knaus Tabbert anticipates the future of recreational mobility. For example, during the 2020 model year, all motorhomes and CUVs are equipped with a charging booster as a standard feature. Now the battery can be charged even faster and more safely. Furthermore, all vehicles are equipped with a BWT water filter system (Best Water Technology), which always ensures clean water on board. For older models, Knaus Tabbert offers a retrofit kit.

For the KNAUS and WEINSBERG motorhomes, the new model year will feature an e.hit rear carrier with a double swivel arm for bicycles and suitable transport boxes as well as an integrated trailer hitch. At the push of a button, the rear carrier swivels automatically from beneath the bumper element within 25 seconds. With a head-up display (available in the optional Media Package), the KNAUS and WEINSBERG motorhomes and CUVs are at the cutting edge of the digital age. The list of innovations can be easily expanded: for example, with the full LED headlamps or the KNAUS CATEYE evolution taillights that are available on certain models, modern keys with secure internal cut key locking system for the cabin door and service flaps, or the optionally available and very practical gas bottle pull-out. Interior and ambience lightingin an energy-saving LED version is now standard at Knaus Tabbert. Beginning in model year 2020, the top-selling WEINSBERG model CaraCompact as well as the successful special model EDITION [PEPPER] will receive a new skylight made from fibre-reinforced polyurethane with integrated insulation. This high-quality LFI technology (long-fibre injection)

was previously only available for models in the higher price range. At the same time, the biometric lightweight construction of the motorhome chassis helps reduce the overall fuel consumption of the towing vehicle. If desired, the luxury caravan TABBERT CELLINI can provide voice-activation for supporting various vehicle functions. Of course, innovation does not stop at good service: in 2020, KNAUS‐ and WEINSBERG‐motorhomes can be serviced and repaired at 29 MAN‐Service Stations throughout Germany.

Laika presents the new Kosmo Van, series which, following on from our low-profile, motorhome, coachbuilt and camper van models, rounds out our offering in the Kosmo range. The new series is designed to satisfy the demand for a compact vehicle which is agile and not too long, without compromising the comfort of a low-profile model.

Available in two layouts, V9 and V5, the new Kosmo Van models are built on a Fiat Euro 6d Temp chassis with 120 CV engine, offering 200 cm of internal width and a total height of 271 cm.

The Kosmo V9 is the first of the two new Laika compact low-profile models. With an overall length of 6.65 m, its layout features twin beds at the rear. The second layout, the Kosmo V5, is shorter than 6 m with a transverse king-sized bed at the rear: the vehicle stands out for its manoeuvrability and versatility, all without sacrificing use comfort.

All Kosmo Van models have a body insulated with extruded expanded polystyrene (XPS), finished with a hail-proof fibreglass roof and non-yellowing aluminium wall panels.  The windows are high quality, with flush-mounted aluminium frame, blackout protection and fly screen. The vehicles offer a premium driving experience, with specially designed ESP, ABS, ASR, Hill Holder and Roll Over Mitigation, as well as passenger airbags (all standard equipment). The ergonomic “Captain Chair” cab seats are extremely comfortable, equipped with two armrests and removable fabric covers coordinated with the living space. Entry into the living space is facilitated by an electric stepladder, while 3 USB ports (standard equipment) allow you to recharge your devices at any time. The new Kosmo Van models are also ideal for winter holidays: a heated floor is available as an option, as is a heated and insulated grey water recovery tank.

As for the rest of the Kosmo range, the interiors are an expression of Italian design and Laika’s famous attention to detail: Tuscan pearwood and glossy white furniture doors give the interior a modern and yet harmonious look. The wall units are fitted with exclusive Laika metal handles. The table and kitchen worktop are finished in an elegant rusted bronze stone effect. The kitchen, fitted with an 89 l refrigerator, is designed for practicality, with a 3 hob cooktop and supplementary worktop. The interiors are ergonomic and functional, and a wide selection of fabrics and eco-leather combinations assure unbeatable comfort both during the day and at night. The 70×50 window in the living area offers excellent illumination during the day, while the electrical system with indirect lighting (including under the kitchen worktop) creates a relaxing and comfortable mood in the evening.

The new Kosmo Van models, like all Laika 2020 vehicles, are guaranteed waterproof for 10 years.
